The Athlete's Galla 2019

For the 19th year in a row, it is ready for sports' big party in the New Year. On Saturday 4 January we will be back in Hamar where we will broadcast live on NRK1. For the 4th year in a row, StarWorks has stage direction and contributes to the editorial team.

Birgit Skarstein (30) makes her debut as presenter when she will host the Sports Gala together with NRK profile Nicolay Ramm (30) in January.

- The sports gala is a gala that is close to my heart. I am so passionate about Norwegian sport, both the breadth and the top. I think the sports community we have is absolutely fantastic. That's why it's incredibly fun to be able to join in and stitch together such a nice celebration of sport, says Birgit Skarstein to VG.

The sports gala will be her first job as presenter.

- It's going to be really exciting, and it's quite a debut! Starting with such a big live broadcast is incredibly cool. At the same time, I don't really know what I'm going to do. That is perhaps why I am currently quite calm, says the 30-year-old.

Skarstein has nine WC medals, five in rowing and four in cross-country skiing. She is the reigning world champion and world record holder in rowing, and has won the World Cup in both disciplines. She has participated in three Paralympic Games.

She was asked to lead the gala already before the summer, but did not immediately say yes. Skarstein is still an active athlete, and therefore had to take a round with both coach and teammates.

- That's how it is when you do active sports. My first thought was that it wouldn't work, because I didn't think I had time. But they have been very cool when it comes to adapting the work to my training plan, explains Skarstein.
